Kitchen remodel 4 - basically done and moving back in

Well, cabinets are painted and in :) The plumbing is done and we are all moved back in. As I type this there are many small pieces left and tomorrow (hopefully) Karl will be finishing with the project by installing the hood box and ventilation fan and ducting. Most of the connections are done, but we just need the box and the vent itself. Then every major portion will be done and we can work on the punch list of small tasks like base trim here, a dab of paint there, figuring out the tiny lingering leak under the sink, and really organizing everything.

This project went three months; supposed to have been less than 6 weeks. So we doubled the timeline :/ The budget was jokingly for $1500 but expected to be $3000. We'll be closer to $9000. BUT the kitchen is great and we got a major deal for this amount of work. With home prices in Bellingham impossible nowadays, we did the right thing in fixing and revamping instead of looking for something else. The old kitchen last 30 solid years. Now it'll last another 30 :)

Well, Karl offered us cabinets for a screamin' deal, so we ended up replacing the cabinets! Not intended. So, old cabinets out...

Kitchen Remodel... :)

Well, it has been a whirlwind kitchen remodel. All of the sudden, we took out a counter that served as a junk collection station. Then we took out an L-cabinet and counter-top. It was an accident, I swear.

Next thing I know, we have spent two weekends we are ripping off drywall, and chipping away at plaster to reveal original lath and the brickwork behind the chimney as well as built-in cabinets too. Then one a Wednesday, my father-in-law came over and helped us to re-pipe the gas lines to move the stove (and reconnect the dryer in a more concise fashion.)

Being inundated with snow has kept us inside a lot and every day this week has been a new piece to the puzzle. We re-finished sections of the floor, sealed the chimney bricks and even had an electrician over today to reconfigure some switches and make space for a sconce (light over the sink) and a ventilation fan over the stove. We sold the refrigerator- downsizing for one that fit better into our new space. And tonight, we insulated the exterior wall.

We hope to do the drywall this weekend... and then we'll hire a contractor friend to install the counter-top and put up some shelving and a built-in cabinet. We'll then install the sink, connect the plumbing and be set to go!

Barring anything out of the ordinary, we should complete this project in swift time (maybe under a month) and with a very reasonable budget. Pictures can show the story too:

Alls that's left for the inside is to
1) caulk the trim edges (M did most of that today)
2) paint the trm
3) make and install a bench
4) any other hooks and interior functioning things we want

Today, we painted and stained the outside banister pieces too. When those dry and we finish the other sides, they'll be ready to get installed

And lastly, our door handle and lockset :) Jeez... there are a lot of little pieces that go into the building world.
